American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins

The fact that I wanted to skip through several sections of this book because I was feeling uncomfortable and anxious are a good sign that the author was doing exactly what she intended: making the reader really feel the fear and pain of the threat and loss that some immigrants truly experience. I struggle to see what all the controversy was about. I felt that it was enlightening, educating, and engaging, and in no way do I see this book as the definitive explanation of the immigrant experience. No book could do that.
