Really enjoyed this.
After a jarring first page that introduces one of the more upsetting themes of the book, Celie’s matter-of-fact tone and strong voice tells a beautiful story of hope in the face of true hardship, forgiveness after unspeakable abuse and mistreatment. (Maybe it was wrong of her to forgive Mr. ___ in the end, but I found it to be completely in keeping with Celie’s character.)
The love between her and Shug was (aptly) sweet; that and Celie’s relationship with Nellie were important beacons of hope shining through some of the most difficult chapters.
