Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare

3.0

This is definitely one of the most thought-provoking Shakespeare plays I have read. I would really love to take the time to read various critics' take on it. There are so many intriguing elements, which are worth closer scrutiny, including the blending or morphing of genres. In parts, it certainly felt more like a tragedy and it was refreshing to read a grittier comedy with a plot that packed a punch. However, I found certain moments jarring as a modern feminist reader. Whilst of course the play must be viewed in its original context, I still found the mistreatment and manipulation of female characters to be unsettling. All in all, a fascinating read.
