The Satapur Moonstone by Sujata Massey

3.0

Hooter: The British need to figure out the best course of action for the future of the 10 year old Maharaja of Satapur being watched over by two maharanis (his grandmom and mom). They need a woman lawyer to talk to these women following the purdah system who has to deal with a series of murders and accidents keeping her on her toes as she tries to get to the bottom of her assignment.

I have been a fan of India's first woman legal eagle Perveen Mistry after book 1 but this book had some of her chutzpah missing as she lumbered along through the story similar to the ardous trek she undertakes after her palanquin breaks and she is left a mess at the end of that journey. Sujata Massey sticks to her strengths of giving us a feel of the 1920s era in a beautiful kingdom of Satapur. Perveen represents the British run Kolhapur agency to talk to the two Queens following the purdah system (rings a bell from book 1). While the storyline tries to thrill with a mix of crime and action - Perveen dealing with more danger than the prior book, her character development sort of slows down in this as we rush through various interesting characters. Overall, a visual treat of a period drama touching over various facets of social issues and mindsets while focusing on the main thriller with deaths and murders and assassinations.
