Two star because its ok.
Old Filth 3, revenge of the retcon! or A tale of unnecessary fleshing of background characters
This book didnt need to be made. It adds some background about veneerings life, attempts to make him a more sympathetic character, tries to make filth even less sympathetic, and a bit of a coda for the Old Filth universe.
The veneering parts are ok, even if it is a bit of a retcon. The ship-getting-blown-up is such an overdone trope tho, russian dancer as spy is also a lame trope. I was hoping for something a bit more interesting and less predictable from ww2-setting lit. Dulcie and Fiscal-smith are terrible characters, who are just boring to read about. I know they're a bit of a framing device for the fleshy detail bits, but it just grinds the book to a halt. They get a happy ending, but who the hell cares?
This book, unlike the TMITWH, requires you read the others. I think Gardam had regrets about how she framed the first and second books, and wanted a semi do-over.
For the biggest filth fans only.
