Demon from the Dark by Kresley Cole
5.0

This was such a pleasant surprise. I've been kind of disappointed with the IAD series, only really liking a few of the books up to this point. This one was fantastic, maybe even my favourite.

The pacing was great, it kept my attention throughout. The characters were endearing in different ways and both showed growth. The plot was interesting and a nice change from the previous books where there is violent hatred between the MCs from day one and usually lasting the majority of the book.

I adored Malkom, and though Carrow was the feisty type of heroine (which I normally don't care for), she was likeable and fairly mature for a party girl. She stepped up when she needed to and that was refreshing. It was also refreshing to see the heroine be the one who grovelled and chased after the MMC for a change.

Malkom is an extremely damaged individual. Though Cole didn't magically cure his PTSD when he found love, it did still feel like his trauma was overlooked at the end. I understand that's a hard balance to achieve when you're trying to create an HEA, but acknowledging that he had work to do on his mental health would've been welcome. I loved that he was both physically strong and emotionally sweet. He was willing and able to kill and yet had such sweet monologues at times.

Little Ruby was cute and I really liked her dynamic with Malkom. I wish she had shown more emotion and more tantrums over her current circumstances, as that would've been realistic for a 7 year old, but overall she was a well written child character.
