Graveyard Shift by M.L. Rio
3.5
I was obviously hugely anticipating this novella, as were many people and I admit that I didn't know a goddamn thing about it other than the author before buying it. I was surprised at how fast-paced it all was, and at the content feeling so academic but not in the way I am used to seeing.
The take on sleep, and those who do not partake it in much or at all, was absolutely fascinating. I especially enjoyed the essay at the end from M L Rio, and how you could feel the personal attachment to academic institutions and insomnia permeate the book as a whole. I didn't find myself particularly invested in the plot, or the characters, or the writing style, but the overarching restlessness/sleeplessness instead. So not like, not ideal.
I feel like so few works of fiction touch on insomnia - dreams are a well-trodden (and favourite) path, but the harsh, damaging prolonged wakefulness is so interesting. I think the Markiplier podcast (and soon to be released TV show) Edge of Sleep (which I adored listening to as it came out in like 2018) is one of the few things of this nature I have consumed, and I think I would like to try and change that.
