I thoroughly enjoyed the first mystery in the Jolene Garcia mystery series and was eager to get my hands on the next volume in the series. I can say that this novel can be read as a standalone mystery if you’ve not had a chance to read Off the Air.
The Story That Wouldn’t Die is a mid-pace, investigative puzzle that lets Jolene Garcia shine as a protagonist. Because the author has real-life experience as a reporter, the newsroom atmosphere and characters are well drawn out. For those who haven’t worked in the media, the behind-the-scenes look at how a modern newsroom operates is a bonus to the story.
Jolene is a heroine who won’t drop a story despite the fact that danger escalates as the novel moves forward. She’s assertive to the point of being pushy, which is what you have to do sometimes to get to the bottom of the story.
I really enjoyed this mystery and did not guess the ending, which was a big WHOA! I always love it when an author can surprise a longtime mystery reader like me.
