King of Battle and Blood by Scarlett St. Clair

“I can be anything. Your jailor, your savior, your lover.” His mouth was closer to my ear as he added, “Your monster.”

King of Battle and Blood is a vampire romance that features enemies-to-lovers and an arranged marriage between a mortal princess and a ruthless vampire king known as the blood king.

This was his claim to me, and right now, I could not even hate it because this pleasure…it was exquisite.

Sometimes great sacrifices do not come at the cost of one's soul, they can be in another form of slavery called matrimony.

To end a war that raged for years, Princess Isolde De Lara of Lara must wed the Blood King of Revekka—Adrian Aleksandr Vasilia.

To spare her kingdom the wrath of the Vampire King and his desire to conquer the Nine Houses of Cordova, she must become the weapon that destroys him.

But as Isolde steps into the Vampire Court and finds herself a prey amongst predators, she must find ways to survive the brutality of the court and assert herself as their queen but most of all—she must fight the passion between her and Adrien for it will be her own downfall.

“You are my light,” he said.
“And you are my darkness,” I replied.

It's weird to say this but I enjoyed parts of this book but did not enjoy it at the same time.

My main issue was how the romance started because I can't pinpoint where it all began. Was it Insta-love? If so, then that explains why I was not convinced of the romance from the start, it just felt abrupt.

Isolde and Adrien were indeed passionate in their feelings and attraction for one another, however it did not develop organically.

Even though the book included two of my favorite tropes but it's not the romance that I enjoyed, it's Isolde as a character.

Isolde was fierce but vulernable at the same time. She was strong but had her weaknesses.

I'm also happy to see more books featuring WOC and plus-size heroines. Representation is always a plus.

As for Adrien, I'm kind of indifferent to him. He didn't win me over.

I also wasn't a fan of the execution of the plot as the plot felt weak to me but I wonder how the author will play it out in the sequel.

Despite my rating, I likely am going to read the next book. I'm interested to see where this is going.
