Rereading this book as an adult was such a joy. Scenes of this book have haunted me since I was 13 when I first read the book (which I read because the girl I had a crush on said it was her favourite Jacqueline Wilson but that's another story for another day 😂) but I was surprised by how much I had forgotten about it. Jacqueline Wilson weaves a beautiful tale about one sided love, growing up and sexuality.

One thing that I picked up this time was that the main character, Sylvie, is never disgusted by queerness, merely the extensive homophobia that her friend experiences through bullying. That is a very powerful message, that is accessible for people of all ages to challenge their own prejudices that may have.
