The Measure

Though I liked that the chapters were short, almost every chapter introduced a new character. It was hard to keep up with each one.
Plus, the characters fell flat & I had a hard time being interested in their stories? The plot of the book is really interesting but from what I read, once the characters received their boxes & saw when they were going to die, the rest of the plot was just about how they dealt with the information? Also, readers go into this book with the preconceived notion that the entire book will be about these boxes & what will happen once everyone receives these boxes. You expect to be taken on a journey. Unfortunately, after everyone receives the boxes, most of what you read is pointless information about the characters? For example, there’s a chapter about Nina where she is anxious about Maura’s string & then it randomly starts talking about Nina’s trauma from being outed in high school, then immediately goes back to talking about her worries for Maura??? Like???? And then we’re introduced to Amie & there’s a whole paragraph about watching some kid on youtube trying to destroy his parent’s strings??? Like why do we need to read this? I know I didn’t read much of the book but I feel like 40 pages should be enough to captivate me a little bit but I just felt like the story fell flat. Again, the plot is really good & I think the concept would be really cool. However, I just don’t think this book was executed well. I didn’t want to force myself to continue reading something that didn’t captivate me or interest me.
