Genesis Begins Again by Alicia D. Williams

4.0

There are 96 things Genesis hates about herself, she knows the exact number because she keeps a list. Some girls at one of her old schools started it but as life kept happening and she started to think those things were true and she thought of more. Like the fact that her skin is do dark people call her Eggplant or Charcoal. Or the fact that they're always getting put out of their house because her dad doesn't pay the rent. When Genesis reaches #100 on her list she has to decide if she's going to continue down the path she's on or if she'll learn to start anew.

An intense story about one girl's internalized racism and self-hate. I thought this did an amazing job showing this perspective. The writing was strong and the story moved through well. I'd recommend this book for someone looking for a book on a different perspective or someone who likes books about people overcoming their struggles.
