I really enjoyed reading through this tonight. The only part I didn't like was how mean Laura could be to her daughter and how her daughter seemed to feel that meanness was her own fault. Makes me think of how harsh, and even cruel, Ma could be in the Little House stories.
I loved how she described the Ozarks: <i>"It is a drowsy country that makes you feel wide awake and alive but somehow contented."</i> Yes.
The book features several photographs: one of a parade around the Mansfield town square and a couple of scenes at their Mansfield farm. In each one, I found spots I've walked or sat at myself; the parade photo shows the exact place my mom and I stood to watch the Wilder Days parade one September about 10 years ago---an event that honors this very family. I'm sure they never imagined their life stories and homes would become such an integral part of American culture.
