The Unwritten, Vol. 1: Tommy Taylor and the Bogus Identity by Mike Carey

5.0

I am going to have to agree with many of the reviews that I read on this volume: this is an amazing concept that I'm surprised I haven't encountered before, at least not quite like this. Tom Taylor is the son of a famous author who allegedly modeled his main character, Tommy, after his son. The author disappeared years ago, leaving the son to rake in the benefits - and drawbacks - of fandom fame. Until someone comes forward and says that Tom's life is a lie and that he isn't actually the author's son. At the same time, strange things start happening that make Tom think something even stranger may be happening: he may not really exist, except as a continuation of the main character in his father's work, somehow brought into the flesh.

The artwork and storyline are fantastic, and keep the characters squarely in focus from start to finish. I knew I was going to like this series when I read the introduction by Bill Willingham, of Fables fame, and saw how he gushed about it. I am definitely curious to see where the series goes next, as it has set up several threads to weave together into a greater plot. I recommend this, much like Libriomancer, to anyone who enjoys reading and imagining life outside of the normal.
