City of Lost Souls
by Cassandra Clare
2.5 stars.
I honestly felt as if I was reading Twilight. Throughout the entire book Clary is immature, selfish, stupid and has no regard for anything but her relationship with Jace.
There's barely a plot throughout the book. Blah blah Jace is possessed again, Alec is insecure about Magnus, Isabelle is stubborn about her feelings for Simon etc etc. Despite a psychopath on the loose all these characters think about is sex. Awful cringe worthy scenes with Simon biting Isabelle and Clary getting hot and heavy with Jace despite her knowing it's not really him and when she should be focused on figuring out Sebastian's plan.
One thing that really annoyed me to the point where I got angry and slammed the book shut was when Clary and Jace are at the faerie club. Jace talks Clary into taking drugs because hey it's fun to be high. I was really angry at Clare for this scene because she glamourized drugs as something wonderful and fun when she knows that young girls read these books and she has an influence over them. It was a horrible choice for her to include this scene with no consequences of Clary or Jace's actions after taking drugs. No, instead Jace just tries to force himself on Clary at the club and Clare never resolves the issue. I am still reeling from this.
There is no character development or depth whatsoever throughout the book and I was constantly searching for the plot. The only thing I enjoyed was seeing snippets of Brother Zachariah which if you've read The Infernal Devices series you will understand.
This series should have stopped after the first three books but I guess it was in Clare's favour to stretch the series without a plot and with poorer writing as each book goes on, for some extra cash.
