I Went to See My Father
by Kyung-sook Shin
What a beautifully written book. I liked the use of varying viewpoints and old letters to tell this story (instead of in a linear fashion). So many adult children with aging parents will likely relate to this book, and some of it hit home for me. How well do we know our family? Maybe not that well when everyone keeps secrets from each other; however, they’re not really secrets, just things that happen that no one wants to trouble other family members about. “Why didn’t you tell me?” is a common refrain throughout. It’s also an homage to Korean family traditions and includes lovingly described passages contrasting country with city life and their respective landscapes. The electronic version I read needed much better proofreading.
