Truth be told, I had not heard of Tyler Merritt before, but all of a sudden I was hearing everyone talk about how awesome his memoir was, so I had to check it out. I found his YouTube video “Before You Call The Cops,” and instantly connected, respected, and loved him, and I HAD to hear more from him. His audiobook memoir did not disappoint. From the first 15 seconds, even when he was just stating who wrote and read the audiobook, Tyler Merritt had me smiling, and it continued throughout the book. Not that it was all sunshine and roses he was talking about. He was very vulnerable and very real, which I love and appreciate and feel very connected with. We also share so many common loves: music, theater, the movie That Thing You Do, the band Counting Crows, the musical RENT, and most of all: people, and love and equality for ALL. I loved hearing his insights and experiences as a Black man in America. His frustrations, his hopes, his dreams, his faith, his love, his short-comings, his triumphs. I loved hearing him tell me his story in his joyful, kind, and soothing voice, as well as his giggles, little side notes, and additional stories that weren’t included in the physical book. It’s hard to write down favorite quotes or stories. It’s ALL amazing, and you should ALL read and/or listen to it. I just finished it, and I already miss him and might just start it right back up immediately and listen to it all over again right now. And put a hold on his new book that was just released a few months ago. 😊 I truly want to meet, hug, and be friends with Tyler Merritt, and I give this book five faces of color, sharing their stories and deserving respect, equality, and love. 💗👨🏿‍🦱👩🏽👦🏾👩🏾‍🦱🧒🏽💗
