Hope: A Tragedy by Shalom Auslander

5.0

The author is wicked smaht.

This book is a caricature of all of the things I enjoy.

It's dark, the darkest, darkly dark. Too dark to be really, seriously dark.
It's edgy, the edgiest. Too edgy to be really, seriously edgy.
It's philosophically pseudointellectual, pseudointellectually philosophical.

It is above all an absurd, funny book. Not everyone will like it or be even moderately okay with it. I'm not sure who the intended audience is, but I found it on a list titled "funny books with substance", which makes it sound a lot more wholesome than it actually is. It's not wheat grass, it's a diet Coke. And rightly so, wheat grass would be too hopeful.
