One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig

3.0

For a debut novel, this was quite strong. What I enjoyed most was definitely the magic system, it was intriguing and original without being hard to understand. Another thing I quite liked was Elspeth's plotline with her magic, I thought her descent into madness added a needed interesting layer to the book.
With that being said, there are quite a few things that need to be improved. First of all, the characters are not as fleshed out as they could be. I waited for the author to show us more sides to our cast, but that just never really happened and I had difficulty getting attached to them. The same can be said with Ravyn and Elspeth's relationship. I couldnt root for them because they had literally no chemistry. Ravyn is especially boring and the fact that he and Elspeth exchanged a total of 4 conversations before falling in love really got me. like truly this kinda ruined the book for me, I wanted these people to know each other better but the fact that they got together so early pissed me off!!
But altogether, I still enjoyed what the author put out. Its just that sadly, this book had potential to be something I really loved, but because of its flaws that didnt happen.
