The Premonition: A Pandemic Story
by Michael Lewis
Not my favorite, to be honest. I'm still interested in reading [b:The Fifth Risk|46266188|The Fifth Risk Undoing Democracy|Michael Lewis|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1562687004l/46266188._SY75_.jpg|62158447]. The thesis of that book is, as I understand it: "Imagine government as a hedge fund managing the risks posed to the society it governs (war, poverty, natural disaster, cyber attack, etc). How do you think about the new kind of risk posed by a government that stops managing them?" In hindsight, we have an answer plopped in our lap: PANDEMIC. But unfortunately, that book was published a wee bit early. This book, [b:The Premonition: A Pandemic Story|56790170|The Premonition A Pandemic Story|Michael Lewis|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1611844095l/56790170._SY75_.jpg|88775146], was a kind of answer to its predecessor's question, given the benefit of hindsight: Here are all the ways the government could have prevented the pandemic, all the wrong turns it took and experts it ignored and programs it shuttered, and BOOM, here you have if not a man-made, then at the very least a not-man-mitigated disaster.
Great premise, but I wasn't a fan of the writing. It seemed way too lost in the weeds and the personalities and the weird personal twists and turns of people I still have little clear understanding what they had to do with the story. This book is like a pile of thread unwoven into the tapestry the author was going for...
