Learn Your Lesson
by Kandi Steiner
Okay Kandi Steiner…I’m listening!
Kandi saved me after I could feel a massive book hangover coming on. I knew I needed something easy and addictive to read, and I picked this book up on a whim after remembering it from social media. The moment I started reading the first page, the hero was right there, described as a grumpy single dad. Grumpy, single dads are my kryptonite! Pair that with intelligent writing, and I’m a goner.
The hero, Will, is a hockey goalie whose wife died when his daughter Ava was two months old. Will, and consequently his daughter Ava, struggle to find happiness and peace in their lives and are very guarded and closed off. Will has had a hard time finding a suitable nanny for Ava, when Chloe, the heroine, enters the picture. Kindergarten teacher by day, and sewing cat lady at night, Chloe saves Will’s ass by offering to care for Ava while he’s on the rink, and after things working out well, they agree to a nannying arrangement. Chloe is just what they need- the bright sunshine to their gloomy clouds.
I want to help readers choose the right book for them, and so I will say that this book has a trope that some don’t love - the dead wife trope. I think I can understand the reasons why people struggle with this particular trope, but as a reader who needs angst in books (or I’m gonna be bored as hell), this aspect of the story really worked for me as it added emotional flavor and depth. I loved how Chloe encouraged Will and Ava not to forget the important part in their lives that she (Jenny) still plays, and how she encouraged them not to forget her.
Let’s not forget one of my favorite parts of the story - the spice. Sweet father of hockey romances, the spice was so good. The tension in that popsicle scene had me on the edge of my seat! 🧊🥶🔥🥵
Also, Chef Patel was the bomb 💣🤣👏🏻!
I don’t even like hockey romances, and this book actually had quite a bit of hockey in it. I’m sure I’m going to get “I told you so” shit from my friends for reading this, but I don’t care. Learn Your Lesson had it all - a great mix of sports, spice, character development, and romance. This is the single dad romance that I will recommend to the right reader over and over again now.
