Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris

3.0

It's equal parts creepy, spooky, and humorous just like any Charlaine Harris novel.

For some reason they all seem to contain some form of pseudo-incest or inappropriately aged romantic interests. I don't know if this is a draw or something edgy she inserts, or perhaps she just thinks that an adult male being romantically interested in a teenager is of popular interest...? Don't get me started on the series which features a romantic relationship between brother and sister (shivers). I'm curious enough about the author's oddities that I wind up reading at least one entry into each series.

The protagonist of this book, Manfred the online psychic, is a good draw. Again, his weird obsession with the teenaged girl in town and his desire to impress her father just creeps me out, but other than this flaw he's an enjoyable character.

But the breakout star of this book, in my opinion, is the highly relatable Fiji. She's the town witch, but she's just like you or me (she reminds me of someone who might have lived in Stars Hollow).

Also intriguing is "the Rev" who manages the church and the pet cemetery. What's he up to? Why does everyone honor him to such an extent?

Why is Midnight, Texas full of such weird people who don't even acknowledge how weird they are?

I really hope that future novels are each told from a different perspective. I liked Manfred, but I'd rather read more about Fiji.

The quality isn't high, and the creep factor is enough to lower my rating to 3 stars. But what did you expect from Charlaine Harris? If you know her and like her, you'll like this too.
