Plague stories are always so interesting and this one had a really unique twist to it! There's one particular plot point that they do to keep up their ruse that I found endlessly fascinating when it came to how their relationship developed, if you know you know.
This is also a story of revolution, of course. Both characters being from conquered people's but both of them having different ways of surviving against the Empire that would wipe them out without blinking was definitely interesting to explore. Is it better to fight and lose almost everything you love or roll over and lose what makes you human? There is no right choice and I think this book does a good job of showing it.
I wish we had gotten a little more information on the Empire itself though. How did it start? Why is it conquering so many nations, other than surface-level greed? They usually have at least a performative reason for why they're colonizing because a lot of people usually aren't really down with colonization, but we never really got that in this book.
A good time, but sometimes it didn't really grip me that well so I'm unsure if I'll continue this duology.
