Everyone In This Room Will Someday Be Dead by Emily Austin

5.0

second read (aug, 2024)

a 200-paged detailed panic attack, both a hug and a punch in the gut

how do i even start this? i’m convinced there is a stark contrast between how mentally healthy and mentally ill people finished this. one will sigh and say, “this is so funny. i’m so glad i’m alive.” the other have taken at least six benzodiazepine before reaching page 242 AND THEN another one on page 242.

austin wrote about gilda so raw and accurately without giving what she represents a too-niche backstory that could make readers think with a definite, “that’s why.” because there’s no sole reason why we are what we are. it’s almost too unassuming partly to reiterate how often it occurs ordinarily but also as a reflection of gilda’s own confusion and uncertainty about what is happening to her and why.

in my second read, i caught details that i didn’t on my first, like how gilda did SH and the amount of depersonalization she experienced. perhaps this is because i didn’t have first hand experience until after my first. which for me, backs my hypothesis that this book could be digested in two, very different ways.

it's like someone cracked open my skull and turned its contents into ink on paper
