Tahira in Bloom by Farah Heron

hopeful lighthearted medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

2.5

This book was easy enough to read, but rife with distractions that prevented me from thoroughly immersing myself in the story.

1. So. Much. Snorting. Rowan snorted, Gia snorted, Tahira snorted. It is nonstop and insufferable. For the love of everything, please find another descriptor.

2. Most of the characters I found to be one-dimensional and lacking, well, character. Even the ones that did have some complexity did not develop their depth until the last 1/4 of the novel.

3. So, so much of the background and important information is told rather than shown, whether in back flashes or just plain poor descriptions. I think this book had major potential, but so much of what could have been captivating plot fell flat because it happened in the past tense, and Tahira was telling us about it instead of letting us experience it with her in real time.

4. Everyone “ships” everyone. I don’t think this was EVER a widespread slang term, and it most certainly was/is not in usage among influencers or “cool” kids. Why do all the teens in this book use that word? It completely pulls me out of the realism of the story.

5. Also, so much cringing. Again… please use a dictionary to find other descriptors.
