A ridiculously ambitious book that somehow manages to fulfill almost all of its aspirations. Very early 2000s. For certain readers will be extremely grating and outdated. For other readers (me) will be a reminder that taking big risks in a sprawling and earnest novel can, with proper execution, lead to big rewards
