The Rose & the Dagger by Renée Ahdieh
5.0
Man, I thought the first book was good...but I did NOT know what was about to hit me.
This book was an absolute delight! I had to wait far too long to receive a copy from Amazon Prime's shipping, but it was soooo worth the wait. This book caused me much rejoicing and many tears! The following points explain my reasoning behind loving this book so much--do not worry I did not spoil anything--
- This book kept me on edge throughout the entire story. I tried, as usual, to predict what was to come in the book and failed entirely. I am glad there was a sub-plot to keep me intrigued. I would like to review this part further, except I fear I could not without spoiling.
- The main character's determination fueled her to fight through her troubles the best she could, and her character was dynamic as she learned what was most important to her. HOWEVER! I could think of another character who's arc was twice as beautiful to behold and witness.
- Although the "empowering female lead" is a very common thing I have read about, this continuation of Shahrzad's story did NOT get old. I applaud Renee Ahdieh for writing a historical fiction novel about a woman that did not make me want to throw the book across the room (unlike another book that I read recently). While establishing the injustice of women in this time period, the author neither over- nor under-emphasized the topic.
