Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Not as good as the first book in my estimation.

The first book, Cinder, was something of an urban fantasy retelling of the Cinderella story with cyborgs and mind controlling moon people. This book is more of a thriller romance retelling of Little Red Riding Hood with werewolves (kinda), mock space travel, cyborgs, and mind controlling moon people. I'm not inherently down on romance stories but the typical romance tropes drive me nuts. Good girl falling for bad boy, girl still pining over demonstrably bad boy, girl convinced bad boy will change. The story bits with Cinder were still pretty good though the space travel stuff wasn't very convincing. I enjoyed the new character, Captain Carswell Thorne, as sort of a comic relief Han Solo lothario.
I'll probably move on to the next book, but I'm a bit more wary now.
