Poison's Kiss by Breeana Shields
3.0
A story based on Indian mythology. How cool does that sound? Being Indian myself, I was excited to read a book based on the origins of my culture. The plot is promising, and it has a unique storyline. I liked this book. But I did not think it was THAT great.
A young woman is given this "gift" as a poison maiden at a very young age. Her guardians are training her how to kill. Naturally, she feels bad about having to commit such an act toward her victims, but she is told she is helping the Raja, a man considered to be a very respectable leader. To her knowledge, the people she is told to kill are a threat to the Raja, so she is in turn, doing her community a service.
The story of a girl who's kiss is poisonous and could kill is overdone. But I was kind of hoping for a better telling of the overused scenario. While the mythology was interesting, I felt that it could have used more explanation.
The story was dark, which I personally believe to be the best part of the story. It does not hold back on soft descriptions when describing serious scenes. The character I enjoyed the most was her little brother. He was the only source of innocence this book provided. But he too, was living the life of his sister. I loved their relationship, and could tell how genuine her love for him was. My heart broke at the flash back scenes because they were saddening to read.
It has the romance like most books have, but it did not overtake the story, which I preferred. I was glad to get more brotherly and sisterly scenes than the romance scenes. However, I think both relationships were present in the novel adequately.
A three star for me is a meh...but I still liked it.
