Above Ground by Clint Smith

5.0

I read this emotional roller coaster of a book in one sitting. Every single poem in this collection is powerful. I was actually summarizing each one in my first draft of this review, but it's best if you discover them for yourself. While most of the poems are about parenthood and being a father, others make powerful social criticisms; it was the latter that made me feel the strongest emotions.

This book is a powerful reminder of why I love poetry: It can portray the mundane in lyrical terms. It can also use precise words to shed light to social injustices. It can even visually represent coastal erosion in Louisiana!

I have been meaning to read [b:How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America|56304760|How the Word Is Passed A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America|Clint Smith|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1618281967l/56304760._SY75_.jpg|86766325], but reading this book definitely bumped Smith's other books into a higher position in my TBR.
