I think Elizabeth Strout is a great writer and storyteller. Her stories are not for everyone as they are gritty and raw and while some provide moments of hope, many do not. The characters live lives that are poor and depressing and how much they mirror reality is not clear to me but it is difficult to find happiness in most of them.
