Tenzing Norgay by Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara
5.0

I *always* love the people features in “Little People Big Dreams” books, and I especially love that the author writes about people that should get more recognition, and often down.

How many people have heard of Sir Edmund HIllary, famous as being the first to climb Mt. Everest? Except, he wasn’t alone. He had Tenzing Norgay with him, his mountaineering Sherpa. Yes, Capitalization there, because Sherpa does not mean one who is a guid. The Sherpa people live at the base of the Himalayas, and, as the story goes, Tenzing grew up wanting to climb to the top of Everest, which his people called Chomolungma.

This, and other things you will learn by reading the picture book biography of his life. Although he was not well known in English speaking countries, he was celebrated in his homeland. There is a statue of him in Sagarmatha, in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Well told story. Wonderful that these is an easily accessible book about his life.
