This was a disapointing sequel to say the least. I loved getting to read about everyone again, but I don't think this lived up to the original.
I saw someone else say the dialouge felt like a monolouge and I couldn't have described it better myself. It just felt like a constant lecture after lecture, an attempt to get a qutable scene rather than saying anything with substance. And the lectures repeated the same message over and over again. It felt like the writing quality was nothing compared to the first book.
The characters meanwhile also felt repetitive. It's like there was one or two character traits chosen for them and that determined their character for most of the novel. In one of Arthur's many speech he talks once again about Talia having the best garden and Phee the best trees and I thought, "yes, we've seen this, you don't need to tell us this again. What ELSE is there to know about them?" And while it did get better towards the end of the book, it still dragged the first part down.
The message was great but it felt beaten down and forced, and I just generally found it hard to get through.  Overall, not what I expected or hoped for.
