Plot Summary: Albert Spirit, a.k.a. Junior, has lived on the Spokane reservation his whole life, but when he turns 14 he asks his parents if he can go to the public high school in nearby Reardon, because he feels that the only way he'll ever get anywhere in life is if he leaves the reservation. However, this is not an easy transition for Albert who is shunned by both the spokane Indians and the white kids in Reardon. As soon as he leaves his life dramatically changes as his sister, dad's friend and grandma all pass away in the same year. He begins to blame himself for all the bad things happening on the reservation, but eventually he realizes that it is not a bad thing to want to better himself and that what goes wrong on the reservation is not his fault.

Appeal Factors: This book is told in first person, journal format by Arnold with accompanying cartoons, because the boy wishes to be an artist. There is a limited amount of cursing and talk of sex and masturbation, however, there is no actual sex in the book and the f-word is only found once.
