The Infinite Sea
by Rick Yancey
First off, I thought that this book was very short. I wanted to read more and find out what happens. However, I have to give this book only a three star because of the writing style. He added two more point-of-views! I mean, the first book was already on edge with 4 different point-of-views and now he adds two more! There is just too many different stories going on and I just wish that the author would stick with a couple and go into the story more. The story was great, don’t get me wrong, but we were only with Cassie for like a quarter of the book. We were actually with Ringer for most of the book. No offense, but she isn’t the person I want to know more about. In the first book, she started off as just another troop that Ben was started to like but now, she is this whole big character and I just don’t understand it. If the author wanted to make her a main character then why wasn’t her story more prominent in the first book? The author just seems to be going to different directions and keep it simple.
Just to let you know, my summaries on books are not really summaries. I tend to say a lot
Ringer is about to leave the group to go find some better shelter for when winter hits. She decides to go by herself so then it will go faster and easier to work with incase something happens. On her way there, she sees a man by a tree. He is dead but only recently. Ringer can’t find anyone around so she decides to wait and rest. Then she hears movement in the bushes and she shoots. The person doesn’t get up so she decides to investigate. To her surprise it was Teacup. Teacup followed her and wanted to come with. Ringer knew that he shot was going to kill her. Then she hears rotors from helicopters. Ringer had a choice to run but instead stayed with Teacup for a chance that the Others will save her.
Evan gave a promise to Cassie to meet her at the hotel outside of the base. He wanted to keep that promise but he was badly injured and his old friend, Grace was helping him. Grace is another Other and knew that he couldn’t tell her the truth about his feelings for the human, Cassie. Grace patched him up and then went to hunt. Evan knew he had to leave so he took what he could to make a splint for his leg and cane. But before he could leave, Grace came back. She came to him and tried to kiss him. Then he took that time to hit her and strangle her with a wire he found. She collapsed and he left. On his way, he felt her near. He should have made sure she was dead but he wanted to get to Cassie. Grace never came to close to him but they each knew about each other. At night, Evan made a fire and knew he couldn’t go to sleep. Grace and Evan started talking and Grace figured out Evan’s secret love for Cassie. She couldn’t believe it. Evan felt others near and knew his fire attracted them. The troops from the base started shooting at Grace and Evan took his opportunity to run. He knew Grace wasn’t going to die but he needed to get to Cassie. He found the hotel and saw Ringer leave and then a little later, Teacup. He took his opportunity to go in. He couldn’t risk them shooting him so one by one, he knocked each person out. He went up and found Cassie’s brother, Sammy. But Sammy started to scream and started shooting. Fortunately every bullet missed but that got Cassie to come in the room and shoot his leg. Cassie knocked him down and then realized it was him.
Cassie couldn’t believe it, but he was alive. Evan eventually lay down and slept. As he was resting, everyone started hearing helicopters about the hotel. They laid low and waited to see what happened. Then the helicopter started to move and get quieter and quieter until it was gone. A few minutes later, a young girl came running down the hall. Sammy recognized her as Megan from the bus when he was taken to the base. Megan said that her throat hurt and she collapsed. Cassie took her into the room and searched her body for trackers. This couldn’t be a coincidence that Megan came after they heard the helicopters. But Cassie couldn’t find any. They Ben suggested that they look in her mouth but Evan stopped them. Evan explained that Megan didn’t have a tracker but did have something else. A bomb in her mouth and once CO2 hit it, it would blow. So they came up with a plan to take it out manually. Cassie was in the best shape to do it. The others were going to go into the diner next door for safety but before they all left, Ben gave Cassie a kiss in case she doesn’t make it. Cassie and Evan take it out successfully but not without waking Megan up and freaking her out. The bomb it out but can still be detonated. So they put it in a bag so no one can breathe on it. Evan realizes that Megan was a test. Either Cassie or the others didn’t find the bomb and they all blow up or someone in their group would know about it and took it out. No one would understand how the Others would know Evan was with them or even helping them, until Cassie remembered Ringer leaving. Cassie believes that Ringer could have been captured and they heard about Evan in her memories from the program Wonderland. Ben didn’t want to believe that she got captured. But they decide that they need to detonate the bomb and leave the hotel. They all packed up and brought a can of CO2 from the diner and Evan was going to stay behind and let the CO2 out of the can and run. Cassie didn’t want to leave him so she fought with him about another way they could do it. While they were fighting Sammy took the bomb from Evan.
The next thing they knew, Grace was there pointing her gun at Evan and Cassie. She talked to Evan and tried to get him to see “reason” and stop loving Cassie. Then Grace kissed Evan. Cassie took her opportunity to tackle Grace to the floor. They were in a brawl and then Grace threw Cassie out the door. Poundcake saw Cassie and ran to shoot Grace. He was about to shoot her when Cassie tackled him to the ground. She was afraid he was going to miss and shoot Evan instead. Grace saw what happened and shot Poundcake before he could shoot her. The others came and Grace ran. Their plan was escalated and they all left the hotel with Ben holding Poundcake. Once they were outside, Dumbo told Ben that Poundcake wasn’t going to make it. So they decided to leave him to die. Poundcake understood and wanted them to get someplace safe. Poundcake wanted to work his way back to the hotel and found once there he found the bomb. Sammy must have dropped it while they were leaving. Poundcake grabbed it and then saw Grace. Behind Grace, Poundcake saw Evan and tried to make him leave. Poundcake took the bomb out and was going to blow them both up. But Grace fought him. They struggled but eventually Poundcake grabbed the bomb and breathed. Cassie and the others looked back and saw the hotel blow up.
Ringer was captured and went through Wonderland. She tried to tell the Others that everyone left and they were no longer there, but didn’t know if they would believe her. Vosch, the leader of the Others, came into her room and played chess with her. Vosch started saying what her father used to say to her when they would play chess and she got upset. After the game, Vosch puts a serum in Ringer’s body. This serum is supposed to make her a super human. Her senses and strength would be magnified. Ringer got sick after being injected but she had a constant companion. His name was Razor. He would bring her food, bathe her and help her go to the bathroom. One day, he brought in a chess board, the same one that Vosch played with her. Razor didn’t like the game very much so he made up his own game, Chaseball. It is a game that mixes Chess with Baseball. While playing, Razor started to use code, moving the players in a way to form letters and then make words. They started communicating about a plan to get Ringer out of there.
The day finally came for their escape and Ringer fought her doctors and guards with ease. Her new system literally warns her when she is in danger and fights off anything that comes her way. For example, when she got slammed in the ground, her body would go numb so she wouldn’t feel the pain, and then she would be able to keep going. Eventually, Ringer went out to find Teacup and when she did, she grabbed her and ran. Outside, Razor was there forcing a pilot to fly the helicopter and take them out. Ringer helped with reinforcements and they took off. Little later, the Others were coming after them and Ringer gave Razor a parachute along with Teacup. They jumped and then the pilot jumped as well. Ringer took the helicopter and crashed it. Because of Ringer’s new super human system, she survived the crash. She saw Razor but didn’t see Teacup. Razor said that he put her in a safe place so he could come get her. Ringer knew something was wrong, but followed him anyway. They got to a barn and Ringer instantly knew that Razor lied, Teacup was not in there. Ringer felt betrayed but she went into the barn anyway and found Vosch. Ringer found out that the whole escape was a test on her capabilities. They took her back to base.
When Ringer arrived, she saw Teacup. Vosch had his hand on her shoulder. When she went up they started talking about Evan. Vosch wants Ringer to find Evan and kill him. Evan is a threat to Vosch because the system in Evan became unpredictable once he fell in love with Cassie. Ringer has no intention to help him. Then Razor came at Vosch and started fighting the guards. One of the guards ended up knocking Teacup back and she hit her head on the counter next to her and went limp. Ringer looked at Razor as he was got shot in the stomach. He looked at her and told her to run. So she did. She jumped out the window and ran.
Cassie and the others were resting when they heard shuffling in the bushes. They someone put his hands up and Cassie instantly knew who it was. She ran to Evan.
With everything going on, I still can’t be excited to read what happens next. I just wish that I didn’t have to wait so long. I also hope that the writing style get a little better next time and doesn’t add any more point-of-views. I just feel that the author is almost at the point when it becomes confusing.
But when it comes to Ringer, I was happy to know that she was starting to fall for a guy that wasn’t Ben. I personally haven’t decided who I want to end up with Cassie but I do believe that Evan is further than Cassie in his feelings for her and I think that Cassie also still has feelings for Ben. Cassie’s story is still not that far developed for me to really believe she is meant to be with either one of them. Again, the reason, I am not happy about the writing style. I mean, I just finished the second book and we are still nowhere closer to any romance for Cassie than we were in the first book and part of that is by adding other people’s stories. By doing that, you add chapters about the same events and causing us NOT to move forward with the story. I mean, if we just stuck with Cassie and maybe a little from Ben and Evan, then we might be way farther in the story. I know that the author wants to add in what is happen to Ringer, but still. I feel the story didn’t get very far in this book and the real only excited part was Ringer’s new abilities. I mean, the whole scene with her “escape” maybe wasn’t needed. Ringer could still have been with Razor and then she could have escaped for real, like she did in the end.
Again, I still want to find out what happens next, just hope the story progresses better than it did in this book, or if anything make a bigger book. Just my opinion.
