Odd Hours: An Odd Thomas Novel
by Dean Koontz
I've mostly enjoyed the Odd Thomas books even though they've never risen to 5 star level for me. I do appreciate the character of Odd Thomas himself, his youthful exterior surrounding a wisdom way beyond his years. He is a sort of paladin who is saddled with the ability to see the dead as well as find people through his "psychic magnetism." Koontz writes him well with a definite voice that appeals to me. He's humble and he enjoys talking with older people, appreciating their stories and lives. He also is looking for less stress in his life but it never seems to turn out that way.
This particular novel has some good parts along the lines I mentioned above, most notably in his interaction with two elderly characters that help him out during the story. But the plot seemed pretty mundane even though the stakes were higher than any previous Odd Thomas novel: preventing missiles tipped with nuclear warheads from being smuggled on shore. Odd Thomas always has a lot of introspective thoughts and there was just too much of that here; it really interrupted the flow of the plot and seemed more like filler.
But overall, the series is still interesting enough for me to continue and I plan to do so.
