Hungerstone
by Kat Dunn
I tried making one of my lesbian and vampire simp friend to read this book, but I think describing the hair eating scene as one of the highlights might have been a mistake...
Before you think anything of the rating I gave this book, let me tell you - this book was a lot of fun, and I really did enjoyed it. I am still unsure of this rating and may change it to be higher, depending on how I feel in the future.
Lenore's story was realistically tragic and upsetting, and as a result making me feel her own anger, her indignation and her helplessness, even when she herself was not aware of those feelings. I hated Henry for his selfishness and disgusting nature, despite his very clear pretty privilege, though for the life of me I couldn't hate Cora. Dislike her sometimes, pity her the others, yes - but no hate.
My one objection is the romance between Lenore and Carmilla. Can you even call it a romance? I would have liked a bit more of Lenore AND Carmilla, as a couple, and was disappointed when Carmilla basically disappeared for the second half of the book. Yeah, Lenore being an independent bloodthirsty girlboss was very fun, but she still felt so lonely, and I wanted her to feel less so and more loved than she ended up being. Carmilla shows up again in the end only when everything is fixed, never there to support Lenore when she is actually struggling against someone.
Yeah, Carmilla is a ruthless vampire, yeah, there was a need for Lenore to stand up for herself, but maybe a little more aftercare after you utterly fuck her over like that? Can someone please give this woman some hot chocolate, a blanket and a break?
It was a very fun read, but it left me with a lingering taste for more.

That isn't to say I wasn't glad she died. I was. Lenore might feel guilty about that but I am not.My one objection is the romance between Lenore and Carmilla. Can you even call it a romance?
