Gidget/Franzie is a fifteen-year-old girl and totally relatable, I think, even to a teen today.

She is driven and while she has all the usual teenage worries, she is spunky and displays an admirable maturity. She falls completely in love with surfing and does everything to learn, what is still a male-dominated sport, against her parents' and the other surfers' objections. Sure she makes a few silly choices, but on the whole, she carries herself well. Of course, it was fortunate that she found two good men who protected her.

It's also wonderful that Kohner manages to capture a teenage girl's voice almost perfectly.

The best part is that this novelette, at only 140 pages, paints such a vivid picture with plenty of story and character.
