Red Rabbit by Alex Grecian
3.0
3.5 ⭐️ I picked up this book because I was given an opportunity to read Rose of Jericho, the sequel by Macmillan Audio. This is a horror book set in old Western times, with a lot of paranormal and witchcraft themes. It sounded way too intriguing to pass up but admittedly the audio for this book did not work for me. I wasn’t a fan of the narrator John Pirhalla, which is a major bummer since I think he narrates the second book. I lucked out and got a Libby digital copy of this book and once I switched it made the experience of this book so much better.
There are A LOT of characters and storylines to keep track of in this adventure western horror and it constantly skips around to different povs and stories. It all comes together in the end but admittedly it was hard for me to keep track of so many characters. The world building in this story is pretty great, I felt like I was on this journey with this motley crew of misfits starting with Rose at the farmhouse of her dead husband and ending in Burden County to find the witch Sadie Grace. I loved how it moved forward and then back in the end and melded all the characters story arcs togethers perfectly. I enjoyed the ending and will be very curious to see how this story extends in the second book. I will say this book isn’t for the faint of heart, it was mild for me but I don’t mind a string of bodies, gore and violence - of which it has plenty (including the cruel death of children and animals). It wasn’t scary, it is horror in the themes of paranormal/supernatural, witchcraft, murder and death. I don’t really want to get into the meat and potatoes of this story, you are welcome to read the synopsis but I enjoyed not knowing much about the story and the wild west ride. Again, if it weren’t for switching to reading, this could have ended up in the DNF pile.
This was my 27th book of 2025.
Format: ebook, Libby
