The Quality of Mercy by J.S. Cook

3.0

Liked this, felt true to the times, paced well. It is a short story but generally only covers a few days so that was OK.
Johnnie Banks, convicted felon, and Nathan Devereaux, federal agent, travelling to see Banks’ ill mother.
So, as the story moves along you wonder what sort of anything these two disparate men can possibly have. Then I wondered if it was a set up to spring Banks from prison (no).
So Banks is who and what we see and really don’t get much at all about him or from his pov.
Nathan is a whole other story or two. We get some of his history. How he got away with things I guess is down to the time (and having money).
So towards the end a large pinch of salt needed, but enjoyed
