The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman

dark emotional informative reflective sad medium-paced

5.0

This was a powerful memoir documenting Spiegelman’s complicated relationship with his father, and his father’s time during the Holocaust.

Narratives of their then present relationship mixed in with stories from the past, including Spiegelman’s own journey on creating this very book.

Plus the stylistic choice of telling this memoir through animals. I genuinely cannot find the words to explain it, but having them all be mice and having the Germans be cats just makes sense. It’s like…how do you tell the story of these horrific and true events without making it too horrific to read about? You make everyone animals.

Recommended and required reading for sure.
