James by Percival Everett
There is a lot I appreciated about this novel - the exploration of code switching, the justification of slavery and other evils by white men philosophers. The reveal - which I will not reveal - though, comes absolutely out of nowhere. There are moments that I felt this reveal could be hinted at and explored that would have made the revelation so powerful while also adding depth and meaning to the idea of code switching, slavery, survival, race, and passing.
In fact, while the first half meanders and ponders (in a good way) the second half of the novel feels rather rushed.
