For some reason I feel a sort of kinship with poor punk kids, so Scout and Kid wormed their way into my heart.

The great thing about this book is that Scout and Kids' race, sexuality, and gender are never labelled. At one point, Kids' dad (rudely) says that Kid can't pick whether to be a girl or boy, gay or straight, and that's it.
