Surviving Autocracy by Masha Gessen

5.0

This is a book that I appreciated reading before but mostly *after* knowing President Trump is a one-term President, and will not be my commander in chief for the full four years of my enlistment. I will keep this book around, for two reasons.

1. To remind myself, if I ever forget, that it wasn't a conspiracy theory, it wasn't a liberal media hoax; the Trump administration was and is truly a disaster, and a feat of corruption the likes of which modern America has never seen. Even now, the President means to hold on to power by any means necessary. He has begun to give up the legal battles, and yet, is continuing the social battle, attempting to mobilize his supporters in mass disbelief and conspiracy. Even now, he would love to be an American Autocrat, but he will not prevail.

2. As a warning, to be sure we do not normalize the behaviour we have seen in this administration, whether we see that behavior continued in a Democratic administration, or a Republican one; the administration of another tired, elderly White male President, or the administration of a Black woman President.

The media must be respected, as those able to hold public servants accountable. And truth must be held in high regard. This book provides so many warnings given to detect a turning towards authoritarian, deceptive, autocratic regimes.
