Justice League: Trinity War
by Doug Mahnke, Mikel Janín, Geoff Johns, Jeff Lemire, Ivan Reis
Don't read this if you haven't read this edition or don't want to know what happens as this is filled with spoilers.
So I could probably give this 3.5 stars.
The concept behind this plot was actually fairly interesting, I just don't think it was executed well.
Pandora's history and the mythology behind her character did pull me in and want to know more. I know this is just a collection of the crossover issues for this event, but for such a central character to the plot, she didn't do a whole lot but mess things up. That may be what makes her a sympathetic character as she just wants to make up for her mistake, but it almost comes off as her being stupid and continually handing the box over to people who really shouldn't be touching it.
And can we talk about the ridiculousness of all the heroes wanting to fight all the time? I swear every other page was someone verbally or physically fighting another. Yes, some of it is explained as the influence of the box, but you can only use that excuse so many times before it becomes ineffective. Why was Shazam so quick to try to beat the living shit out of superman instead of being like, "hey I was just trying to be respectful of my former enemy"? But no, he just responds with punching. And then when doctor light is murdered and everyone flips out but the guy who was framed for it. I feel like there's got to be more than one remotely even tempered person in the two leagues. But that's just me.
But back to Pandora for a moment. Was anyone really confused by the one chapter where she suddenly figures out how to kill the Sins? Ok, so only she can see them, but everyone is fighting again for whatever reason (even though Wonder Woman just picked up the box the page before) and then *poof* Pandora can kill the sins. But we never see the result of that. Did she kill them all? What does that mean for our Earth? Was she just off punching air in the background while everyone else scrambled for the box? The timing between that chapter and the next was off.
And to finish this super long review, I'll talk about the ending. So everyone I fighting again because of the box, but this time they are in Greece and we finally get to meet the Outsider and The Atom reveals her true allegiance. To be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about the whole science instead of magic thing with the box. Like,ok, I'll play along, I guess. But there's a giant plot hole with that idea: if the box was sent through the dimensions thousands of years ago, time would have to pass very differently in Earth-3. Maybe I'm missing something since I haven't read the Forever Evil book yet. Also, who was the female that made it through with Alfred 5 years ago? They never mentioned her or showed her face, she was just in the couple panels that showed Alfred crossing dimensions. Did I miss something?
At this moment I am glad I have seen the animated movie that sort of follows the Forever Evil storyline. I feel like it may help me read the coming volume.
TL:DR not bad, but could have been better and could have cut out a lot of the random fighting and running place to place. And there could be a gaping plot hole for the Forever Evil event.
