I Hope You Get This Message by Farah Naz Rishi
3.0

I struggled with this book. I loved the idea, and I so wanted to love this book more than I actually did.

We follow three teenagers as they face the end of the world. Aliens have sent a message to Earth and now everyone is trying to figure out what that means and how to survive. People are reaching out to lost loved ones, some people are profiting off the fear, and others are just trying to figure out what will happen or even if this is real.

Overall, I thought this was just an average story. I thought that characters and their journeys were interesting and I liked how their stories eventually intertwined and came together. Jesse, Cate, and Adeem all have their own agendas and all live in different parts of the USA, but thanks to their own agendas they end up in Reno, NV. I loved that their story arcs were wrapped up but not necessarily in the way we expected. I also liked that throughout the story we never got a clear picture of the Aliens and whether or not they were actually going to invade Earth. We never could tell if the threat was real or if it was an innocent message. We never really got to understand why the aliens reached out, just that they did. And I loved the uncertainty of it all.

What I think I struggled with was the pacing of the story and the characters. I struggled to connect with any of the characters and actually care about their journeys. I didn't really care about whether or not they survived and what they needed to do in order to make it to the end. I also felt like the story didn't really flow for me, but I am having trouble elaborating why.

I recently read Dry by Neal and Jarrod Shusterman, and I loved that story. I thought that he did such a good job escalating a disastrous situation in a way that made me anxious and fearful and cared about everything that happened to the characters. And because I loved that book so much, and I think that affected how much I liked this story because in the back of my head I knew there was a better written story out there.

I would recommend this book to anyone who thinks this story line sounds interesting and wants to take a chance on it. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't great either.
