The Haunting of Maddy Clare
by Simone St. James
3.5 stars. Might bump up to 4 depending how it sticks with me.
This historical fiction was an enjoyable, quick read with inquisitive main characters & a strong ghost character. I liked it less than the author’s more recent books — The Book of Cold Cases (loved), The Sun Down Motel, & The Broken Girls— but see the merits of the publisher re-releasing this story. And the new cover is gorgeous.
Though I enjoy a good romance novel now & then, there are romance scenes in this story that seemed out of place to me and didn’t serve to advance the plot or secure my interest.
TW: sexual assault, combat-related PTSD
