Healers and Thieves by Susan Quilty
5.0
I've been a fan of YA novels from the time I was an actual young adult, and even now that I'm a parent of one and I'm excited about this new series of books from Susan Quilty.
[Potential Spoilers] This book follows the life of young teen Amanda Jones and she navigates both her "normal" teenage life and her newly discovered one as the youngest member ever of the Psychic Traveler Society. What Susan has done beautifully with her first book in this series is blending the awkwardness of those early teen years; friendships, hormones, family life, etc. in with this new fantasy world that Amanda Jones is discovering. The reader is taken on a fantastic journey along with the protagonist as both reader and Amanda Jones navigate a the new places, people, and worlds. As always, Susan Quilty's writing draws the reader in, and the vividness of the writing, the beauty of the descriptions of both the scenery and the interpersonal relationships, makes it hard to have to end the book. In fact, one of my favorite things about the authors way of writing is how she so eloquently describes emotions and interpersonal relationships.
While I've loved the popular YA dystopian novels that I've read in this past, I think this series is going to be a new, fast, favorite of both mine and my daughters. The message of hope and strength weave their way through this novel and seem to promise to keep doing so in the next books. Additionally, my daughter isn't that big of a fantasy-book lover, but still thoroughly enjoyed this novel.
The only con? This book just came out and now we have to wait for the second book to come out before we can continue the story!
