Even as We Breathe by Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle
2.0

It breaks my heart to not like this book, but it just felt squandered. There was so much opportunity to describe place and culture, and it did not do that. It takes place in the beautiful Smoky Mountains, but there is very little description of the landscape. And scant descriptions of the Axis diplomats staying at the resort where much of the action takes place. Weeks later, I'm still processing how the main character described clouds as being like tumbleweed (1. bad description full-stop, 2. does this description make sense to someone who lives in the Smoky Mountains).

It also was not a well-crafted story, with the main action taking place 3/4 of the way through the book. Finally, while I could feel the heart the writer had for the main character, I struggled to connect with him, until the final 3 pages, which is just too late.
