Her Name in the Sky
by Kelly Quindlen
I had this book on hold from the library for a while and when it finally became available, I had completely forgotten where I had heard about it or what it was about. I started reading without looking into the synopsis or book jacket. Most likely for this reason, once I started getting into it and realized it would be a coming-of-age story with heavy Catholic themes, I started getting a little turned off.
However, it ended up being an interesting read that managed to hold my attention for an angsty and emotional ride. I found myself tearing up at parts, smiling at others, and once in a while, even flashing back to my own youth even though my own coming out/coming of age story was vastly different.
One thing that took me out of the book on several occasions - and this is likely just a personal preference - is that it is written in third person present tense. I didn't realize until I read this book, but apparently this is a style of narration I really do not like.
I also found there were parts that were a little preachy to me, but that's probably my agnostic view talking. I still appreciated some of the theories and introspection on Catholicism though.
